Recovery Generally faster
Suitability After cardiac evaluation

Device Closure & Balloon Valvuloplasty Treatment

This treatment covers a group of catheter-based, non-surgical procedures used to close abnormal openings in the heart's walls (ASD, VSD, PDA), seal an unwanted leak around a previously implanted valve (paravalvular leak closure), widen a narrowed heart valve (balloon valvuloplasty) and, in selected patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, reduce a thickened heart muscle (alcohol septal ablation). All of these are performed through a small puncture in the blood vessel without any chest incision.

Patient suitability is determined after detailed clinical examination, echocardiography and evaluation of the defect’s size, position and anatomy.

Conditions treated with Device Closure & Balloon Valvuloplasty

ASD Atrial Septal Defect

A hole between the heart's upper chambers (atria), present from birth, that can enlarge the right side of the heart if left untreated.

VSD Ventricular Septal Defect

A hole between the heart's lower pumping chambers (ventricles) that allows abnormal mixing of blood between the two sides of the heart.

PDA Patent Ductus Arteriosus

A persistent blood vessel connection between two major arteries that normally closes shortly after birth but remains open in some individuals.

PVL Paravalvular Leak

An abnormal leak of blood around the edge of a previously implanted prosthetic heart valve, which may need catheter-based closure.

How the Device Closure & Balloon Valvuloplasty procedure is performed

Device closure uses a specially designed umbrella-shaped occluder device, delivered on a catheter, to permanently seal a hole in the heart's septum such as an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) or Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Balloon valvuloplasty uses an inflatable balloon to stretch open a narrowed heart valve, while paravalvular leak (PVL) closure seals a small gap around a previously implanted prosthetic valve using a closure device. Septal ablation uses a small, controlled amount of alcohol delivered through a catheter to reduce a thickened section of heart muscle blocking blood flow.

The procedure is performed in a specialised cardiac catheterisation laboratory. Continuous imaging allows accurate positioning of the device and assessment of the result before completion.

Benefits of Device Closure & Balloon Valvuloplasty

  • No open-heart surgery or chest incision required
  • Short hospital stay, usually one to two days
  • Faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities
  • Immediate improvement in blood flow once the defect is closed or the valve is widened
  • Suitable for both children and adults with favourable anatomy
  • Reduces the long-term risk of heart enlargement and heart failure

Recovery after the procedure

Most patients are mobile within a few hours and discharged within one to two days. Children generally return to normal play and school activities within a week, while adults are advised to avoid strenuous exertion for a short period. Follow-up echocardiography is scheduled to confirm the device remains well seated and that heart chamber size is returning toward normal.

Medication instructions and follow-up schedules should be followed carefully. Contact the treating doctor immediately in case of unusual pain, bleeding, swelling, fever or breathing difficulty.

What happens during the procedure?

Each treatment is planned according to the patient’s heart anatomy, medical condition and clinical requirements.

01

Detailed Evaluation

Echocardiography and other imaging tests are used to assess the exact size, position and anatomy of the defect or valve narrowing.

02

Vascular Access

A small puncture is made in the femoral vein or artery under local anaesthesia to introduce the catheter.

03

Device or Balloon Delivery

The closure device or balloon catheter is carefully guided to the exact site of the defect or narrowed valve under live imaging.

04

Positioning and Deployment

The device is opened and positioned precisely, or the balloon is inflated, to close the defect or widen the valve opening.

05

Confirmation and Recovery

Echocardiography confirms correct device position and improved blood flow before the catheter is withdrawn and the puncture site is closed.

Questions about Device Closure & Balloon Valvuloplasty treatment

General information to help patients understand the procedure. Individual advice may differ according to medical condition.

No. Device closure is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure performed through a small puncture in the blood vessel, without any chest incision or open-heart surgery, in patients with suitable defect size and location.

Both children and adults with a suitable defect can undergo catheter-based closure. Many adults are diagnosed with ASD or PDA later in life and benefit significantly from timely closure.

PVL closure is a catheter-based procedure that seals an abnormal leak around the edge of a previously implanted prosthetic heart valve using a specially designed closure device, avoiding the need for repeat open-heart surgery in many cases.

Most patients are discharged within one to two days after the procedure, with follow-up echocardiography scheduled to confirm the device or valve is functioning well.
