Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair (MitraClip Implantation) MitraClip

A catheter-based clip treatment that repairs a leaking mitral valve edge-to-edge, without open-heart surgery.

Procedure Type Minimally invasive
Hospital Stay Usually 24–48 hours
Recovery Generally faster
Suitability After cardiac evaluation

MitraClip Treatment

MitraClip is a transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) treatment used for severe mitral regurgitation, a condition in which the mitral valve leaflets fail to close properly, allowing blood to leak backwards into the lungs. Instead of replacing the valve, a small clip joins the leaflet tips together, significantly reducing the leak while preserving the patient's own valve tissue.

Patient suitability is determined after detailed clinical examination, echocardiography and evaluation of the defect’s size, position and anatomy.

Conditions treated with MitraClip

Degenerative MR Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral valve leakage caused by a structural problem with the valve leaflets or their supporting structures.

Functional MR Functional Mitral Regurgitation

Mitral valve leakage that develops secondary to an enlarged, weakened heart, common in heart failure patients.

Heart Failure Heart Failure with Significant MR

Patients with heart failure symptoms and significant mitral regurgitation despite optimal medical therapy.

High Surgical Risk High-Risk for Mitral Surgery

Patients considered high-risk or inoperable for conventional open mitral valve surgery.

How the MitraClip procedure is performed

Under general anaesthesia with continuous transoesophageal echocardiography guidance, a catheter is passed through the femoral vein and across the atrial septum into the left atrium. The clip is positioned precisely at the site of the leak and closed to grasp both mitral leaflets, creating a double-orifice valve that immediately reduces regurgitant blood flow.

The procedure is performed in a specialised cardiac catheterisation laboratory. Continuous imaging allows accurate positioning of the device and assessment of the result before completion.

Benefits of MitraClip

  • No open-heart surgery or heart-lung bypass required
  • Significant, immediate reduction in mitral regurgitation
  • Improved breathlessness and reduced heart failure hospitalisation
  • Short hospital stay, usually two to three days
  • Suitable for elderly and high-risk patients unfit for surgery
  • Preserves the patient's own native valve tissue

Recovery after the procedure

Most patients experience noticeable symptomatic relief within days of the procedure. Regular echocardiographic follow-up and continued heart failure medication remain important for sustained long-term benefit.

Medication instructions and follow-up schedules should be followed carefully. Contact the treating doctor immediately in case of unusual pain, bleeding, swelling, fever or breathing difficulty.

What happens during the procedure?

Each treatment is planned according to the patient’s heart anatomy, medical condition and clinical requirements.

01

Detailed Imaging Assessment

Transoesophageal echocardiography maps the exact site and mechanism of the mitral valve leak.

02

Vascular Access

A catheter is introduced through the femoral vein under general anaesthesia.

03

Transseptal Crossing

The catheter is carefully guided across the atrial septum into the left atrium under imaging guidance.

04

Clip Positioning and Deployment

The clip is positioned at the leak site and closed to grasp both mitral leaflets, reducing the regurgitation.

05

Confirmation and Recovery

Live imaging confirms the reduced leak before the clip is released and the catheter withdrawn.

Questions about MitraClip treatment

General information to help patients understand the procedure. Individual advice may differ according to medical condition.

MitraClip treats severe mitral regurgitation by clipping the mitral valve leaflets together, reducing the backward leak of blood without open-heart surgery.

Patients with severe symptomatic mitral regurgitation who are considered high-risk or inoperable for conventional mitral valve surgery are typically good candidates.

Most patients stay in hospital for two to three days and notice improved breathlessness and energy levels within the first week.

No, MitraClip repairs the patient's own native valve by joining the leaflet tips together; it does not replace the valve, unlike TMVR.
